July 4th Softball Battle

By Lieutenant Jay Ferriola
July 4, 2009

On a beautiful Saturday July 4th, members of the Good Will Fire Co #2 and the Fame Fire Co #3 took to the field to do battle for bragging rights in a hoped-to-be-annual softball event.

The Fame took an early lead in the top of the first but the team pulled together to only allow 1 first inning run, a lead off home run by FF Carlin. In the bottom of the first the Good Will showed up early putting up 4 quick runs.

The Fame then recaptured the lead in the 3rd with a 4 run inning of their own but the Good Will answered right back with a two run bottom of the inning.

Then in the 4th the wheels appeared to come off for the fielders of the Good Will allowing 8 runners to cross the plate. The Good Will decided not to roll over and battled back putting 5 runs up on the board in the bottom of the 4th.

A field error also led to a 2 run inside the park home-run in the 5th for the Fame who was then leading 15-11. The members of the Good Will tired of trailing put up 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th to seize the lead again from the Fame at 16-15.

The Fame tied the game in the top of the 6th and were quickly retired following the run.

The Good Will forgot how to hit in the bottom of the 6th, being retired in order 1-2-3.

That set up a 7th and final inning to settle the score once and for all.... Unfortunately for the members of the Good Will the members of the Fame put up 5 runs in the top of the inning and the Good Will could not answer back with any runs of their own.

So the game had finally been decided with a final score Fame 21 - Good Will 16.

A good time was had by all that participated and by some spectators that showed up to document the exciting action on the field.

A special thanks goes out to the members of the Fame Fire Co for accepting the challenge and the members of the Good Will Fire Co look forward to the next challenge of Flag Football on Labor Day.
