By Third Class Firefighter Dave Smiley Jr.
February 25, 2017

The volunteers of the Good Will Fire Company were kept busy throughout the weekend, handling multiple emergencies while also hosting a celebration of the 184th anniversary of the Company. On Saturday, February 25, members gathered at Station 52 for the annual celebration of the Good Will Fire Company #2 being formed. During this event, Lieutenant Andrew Rychlak was named as the 2016 Firefighter of the Year, an awarded determined by a vote of peers. In the early morning hours of Sunday, February 26, the duty crew was alerted to handle three emergencies within the 52 and 54 box areas. First, at 12:02AM, Stations 52, 53 (Fame Fire Co. No. 3), Ambulance 55 (Good Fellowship Ambulance & EMS Training Institute), and Medic 91 were dispatched to the 300 block of South High Street for the pedestrian struck. Engine 52-2 was recalled as the response was being made. At 4:35AM Stations 52 and 51 (First West Chester Fire Co., Engine Co. 51) were alerted to the 700 block of East Gay Street to the rear of the McDonalds for a reported tree fire. Engine 52-2 (FF Green) made the response and found a tent on fire, with extension to the wooded area. The fire was quickly extinguished, and as the Engine crew was restoring equipment a car fire was dispatched at West Chester Pike and Green Lane in the 54 (Goshen Fire Company) box area. Engine 52-2 and Engine 51-1 contacted Deputy 54 and advised they were staffed on the air, and were added to the assignment. Engine 52-2 arrived first to find multiple vehicles on fire and the crew placed a line inservice. Upon the arrival of additional companies a second line was placed inservice and crews operated for over an hour. Photo credit to Dave Smiley Sr., and President Hartz.
